Alumni of the National School of Administration (Aguesseau Class), he chose to embrace a diplomatic career and joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1982. He was appointed in 1993 the First Counsellor of the French Embassy in Washington and participated to the french delegation regarding peace negotiations in Dayton (november 1995). From 1996 to 2001, Pierre Buhler was cultural advisor and permanent representative of french universities in New York.
Diplomatic adviser to the Ministry of Defense, then Secretary-General of the 10th Ambassadors Conference (2002), he was then elected Associate Professor of Political Science (international relations) at Sciences Po. He was appointed Special Advisor to the Director-General for globalization at the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, prior to becoming French Ambassador in Warsaw from 2012 to 2016.
He was then appointed Secretary-General of the French Delegation to the 71st General Assembly of the United Nations. In August 2017, he was appointed by the President of the French Republic, President of the Institut Français, Ambassador, Special Advisor promoting the France’s cultural action abroad.
